The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that I’ve been a little bit absent lately, from here on the blog and from my Facebook pages – both personal and business.

Or maybe you haven’t even noticed I’ve been gone. I hope that’s not the case, I hope you’ve missed me To explain.

I had ‘stuff’ to attend to. I’d come up against a bit of a wall, it was blocking my way and preventing me moving on with life, I needed to get around it, or over it, or through it. I needed to break it down, brick by brick if necessary.

It was time to make some life decisions and implement them, and I needed the space and time to do this. Those decisions weren’t easy, there was some serious soul searching going on, some big questions asked and answered with an honesty that we generally struggle to produce in our lives and ultimately a complete change of lifestyle and direction was called for.

The good news – that wall has gone, I did break it down and I am back on track – a totally different track and heading into a totally new and exciting future.

Some details, in case you’re interested:

I sold the home that I’ve lived in for the last 12 years.

I sold or gave away many of the unnecessary ‘things’ I’d accumulated over this time.

I put my good bits and pieces – some furniture, photo albums and things that I didn’t want to part with into storage.        I packed a suitcase of clothes, a plastic tub of kitchen necessities and another of business/stationery items (okay maybe 2 tubs of paperwork and stationery and books and pens and highlighters and …)

I put it all in the car with my laptop and printer

And I’ve taken on a house sitting lifestyle.

Yep, I’ve given up the so called security of having my own home for a life of living in other people’s homes. Some people may think I’m mad but do you know how free I feel right now? It’s a wonderful feeling. That weight has been taken off my shoulders, the pressure that comes with home ownership with all its associated costs and dramas (particularly with an older house that is constantly in need of maintenance and only one income on which to do it) has lifted and there’s a lightness about me now.

I’m free to make plans and to travel, to live in different types of homes in different suburbs and to relax and enjoy the next few years. Currently I’m looking after a beautiful little feline friend in an apartment close to the city. Black cat   Next I head to the country, an hour and a half outside Perth to stay in an architect designed, open plan home on large acreage with wonderful views, and over the summer I’ll be based back in the suburbs for a 14 week stay in a home complete with King Charles spaniel, air conditioning and a spa.

Long term plans even include house sitting in other parts of Australia and overseas.

I’ve just headed off on the next exciting part of my life. I’ve done it before, completely changed direction in life and confounded everyone with my decisions to take the directions that I have and experience and explore what I’m capable of and what is out there waiting for me.

Somehow, I just know when it’s time to make a change. This time it was a big decision to make as I’d fallen back down that rabbit hole of comfort and it all seemed too hard to make a move. But ultimately when I looked at the pros and cons and what I actually wanted from life, it wasn’t a difficult decision at all – it was the right decision for me.

There’s lots of quotes out there about forks in the road, taking the path less travelled and changing directions in life and what it all comes down to is that we need to do what is right for us in life. If veering off the main road and taking a detour down a little used track works for us then who’s to say we shouldn’t take that first step.

So what does this mean for Travellingbag?

It means that I’m going to be living in different places, initially close to Perth but eventually I’m looking at house sitting overseas too, which in turn means that there is going to be much more fodder (sorry, so many more opportunities) for blog posts around travel. My intention, strong at the moment but if I flag just give me a bit of a kick in the proverbial, is to get a post out to you every couple of weeks.

Wish me luck
